The Visual Communication: Flashing Lights course introduces you to many aspects of communication on board a vessel. Visual Morse code is a particularly important aspect of communication, it is required for anyone looking to acquire their OICNW certification. This course also features the HALO° Flashing Lights Simulator which will assist in the training of practical skills.

Visual Communications course, also known as the Flashing Lights or Visual Morse Code provides training and assessment for licensed deck officers required to demonstrate competence of ability to transmit and receive information by visual signaling (Flashing Light) via Morse Code in accordance with 46 CFR subpart B, part 10 and Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code.

This course is required for all candidates who are seeking to acquire their original Officer in Charge of a Navigation Watch Certificate of Competence either a raise in grade from Able Bodied Seaman or Able Seafarer-Deck or through an approved program such as Northeast Maritime Institute’s – College of Maritime Science Third Mate Option or through a Federal or State Maritime Academy.

Learning Objectives
The course covers the following subject matter:

  • The Morse code alphabet
  • Visual Morse code
  • The International Code of Signals (PUB 102)
  • How to Flash a signal light to transmit visual Morse code
  • How to decode Morse code signals

Duration
This online course is based on an 8 hour in-person course.

USCG
The USCG Approval meets the visual signaling requirements of 46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(vi) and 11.319(a)(4)(vi) if presented within 1 year of completion AND demonstrating the equivalent of assessment 8.2A for an STCW, as amended 2010 endorsement as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels 500 GT or more.


Dominica
The Visual Communications course  provides training and assessment for licensed deck officers required to demonstrate competence of ability to transmit and receive information by visual signaling (Flashing Light) via Morse Code in accordance with Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code.

Assessments

Written Examination
The written exam can be taken online using HALO° Exams. You will receive 3 attempts for your exam. If you fail all 3 attempts, you must pay a retake fee of $25.00.
