Examination & Assessment

Policies and Procedures

On Site Courses

The course instructor records the exam attempts for all students.  A student who fails their first exam attempt may request to retest the same day.  Students who have failed two attempts at an exam, will meet with the instructor to discuss areas of weakness before attempting the third try.  The Institute shall require the student to wait at least 24 hours before attempting the third try.

When a student fails all three exam attempts, the instructor will recommend to the Registrar or Chief Academic Officer to have the student retake the entire course or one or more sections of the course in which they were weakest.

Student Exam Retakes are tracked by the Registrar’s Office on a spreadsheet.

NEMO° Online Courses using HALO° Exams for Exam Proctoring

If a student fails the first attempt at an exam, they can request a second attempt through the HALO° portal, which can be taken immediately.  If the student fails the second attempt, the Registrar’s Office will recommend they wait until the next day to retest and take the time to review materials.

Within the HALO° system, users are automatically notified of the exam attempt failure (or exam attempt invalidation) and are notified to contact the Registrar’s Office at Northeast Maritime Institute.  If the third exam attempt is failed, the student will be required to pay a retake fee, which will include their re-enrollment in the relevant course or section(s) of the course (see next section for more details). The HALO° Exams system provides for full reporting of student exam attempts.
