This course bundle includes the courses covering the required training for application for an endorsement as an Able Seafarer Engine, in accordance with Section A-III/5 of the STCW Code*. 180 days of sea service are required to qualify for the Able Seafarer Engine endorsement per the STCW Code requirements. The program includes the following online courses, for which most require the completion of an onboard Training Record Book in order to satisfy the practical minimum competencies set forth in the STCW Code.  STCW Basic Training is also required for formal endorsement by any Administration, and is offered by many schools around the globe, which is not included in this bundle, as the course requires a practical firefighting, first aid and water survival demonstrations  that cannot be completed onboard.

You will receive 3 attempts for each exam. If you fail all 3 attempts of an exam, you must pay a retake fee of $25.00 for that exam.

Upon completion, you will receive training certificates for all three courses in the program.


This course meets the mandatory minimum requirements for the knowledge, understanding and proficiency in Table A-III/5 of STCW Code at the Support Level, for Able Seafarer Engine rating, including:

Function 1: Marine Engineering at the Support Level

Function 2: Electrical, electronic and control engineering at the support level

Function 3: Maintenance and repair at the support level

Function 4: Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the support level

Students will complete the online theoretical portions of the course through this system and complete the required practical assessments onboard their ship, by downloading the provided Training Record Book and having a licensed engineering officer on board the vessel sign off on the required demonstrations.

In order to obtain an Able Seafarer document upon completion of the course, each student entering the program must be at least 18 years of age, be able to pass the prescribed physical examination, and meet the sea service requirements.  As a minimum the applicant must have 360 eight hour days in the engine department .

This course is approved by the Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime Administration.

This online program includes all required course theory through presentations, reference material, videos and quizzes in the required subject areas.  A completion receipt will be issued upon completion of the online portion with directions for downloading the required onboard assessments.  We recommend downloading the reference materials so you have access to them during the course, especially the CFR reference material, which lists requirements for items to be carried in a lifeboat/liferaft, which will appear on your quizzes.

This courses meets the requirements of  STCW’95 Section A-VI/2 and Table A-VI/2-1.

To provide the necessary background and knowledge of the subjects for Proficiency in Survival Craft, lifeboats, rescue boats and liferafts. Upon completion of the online portion of the course, assessments and exam, the student will receive a certificate of completion meeting the requirements of the STCW Code Section A-VI/2 and A-VI/2-1.

** Practical assessments include launching and recovering a lifeboat, demonstrating oar commands, rowing a lifeboat and starting and stopping a lifeboat engine.

The course provides participants with the knowledge required for seafarers with designated security duties in connection with a Ship Security Plan (SSP) to perform their duties in accordance with the requirements of Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS ’74 as amended, the ISPS Code, and section A-VI/6-2 of the STCW Code, as amended.

*Approved by the Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime Administration, Office of Marine Personnel only for mariners with Commonwealth of Dominica credentials. This online course has not yet been approved by the United States Coast Guard.

**The Shipboard Practical Assessments must be completed and signed by the Captain in order to complete the course and receive your certificate. The assessments can be found under the Resources section on the left hand side of the Course Dashboard.

* Currently approved by the Commonwealth of Dominica.  A written examination may be required by the Flag State Administration as part of their licensing protocols.
