Medical Certificate Requirements
- Original – Must hold or be approved for Medical Certificate.
- Renewal, ROG, New Endorsement – Must hold an unexpired Medical Certificate or submit a Medical Certificate application
Drug Testing Requirements
- Must be Drug Testing Compliant. 10.225/10.231 Mariner Fees must be paid

Recency
90 days in the past 3 years on vessels. Engine Department experience on vessels of the appropriate tonnage may be used for recency since overall service does not have to be on deck.
1080 total days of service, in any position or department, on Ocean, Near Coastal or Great Lakes waters, OF WHICH service on inland waters may substitute for up to 50% of the total required service AND 720 days MUST have been as master, mate, or equivalent position while holding a MMC endorsement as master, as mate, or as operator of uninspected passenger vessels,
OR
720 days as a Master or Mate of Ocean or N/C Towing Vessel and completion of an examination.
NOTE:
Service will be credited as follows:
- Service on GL will be credited day for day.
- Service on vessels to which STCW applies (inland or NC) will be credited day for day.
Great Lakes
360 total days of service, in any position or department, OF WHICH:
- 180 days must have been as a Master, Mate, or equivalent position while holding a license or endorsement as Master, Mate, Master or Mate (Pilot) of towing vessels, or OUPV, AND
- 90 days of service on Great Lakes
Inland
360 total days of service, in any position or department, OF WHICH:
- 180 days must have been as a Master, Mate, or equivalent position while holding a license or endorsement as Master, Mate, Master or Mate (pilot) of towing vessels, or OUPV,
200 GRT
- 270 days (25%) of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR
- 540 days (50%) of service on vessels over 67 GRT 11.422
100 GRT
- 270 days (25%) of service on vessels of 51 GRT or above, OR
- 540 days (50%) of service on vessels over 34 GRT
50 GRT
- 270 days (25%) of service on vessels over 25 GRT, OR
- 540 days (50%) of service on vessels 17 GRT or above
25 GRT
- 811 days (75%) or more days of service on vessels of 5 GRT or less, OR
- 270 days (25%) of service on vessels over 6-25 GRT, OR
- 540 days (50%) of service on vessels 1-16 GRT
(If mariner does not meet the tonnage calculation for 50 GRT or more he/she is eligible for 25 GRT)
200 GRT
- 90 days (25%) of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR
- 180 days (50%) of service on vessels of 67 GRT or above
100 GRT
- 90 days (25%)of service on vessels of 51 GRT or above, OR

- 271 days (75%) or more for endorsement on vessels 5 GRT or less, OR
- 90 days (25%) or more on vessels 6-25 GRT, OR
- 180 days (50%) or more on vessels 1-16 GRT
(If mariner does not meet the tonnage calculation for 50 GRT or more he or she is only eligible for 25 GRT)
- Course Completion Certificate in lieu of Coast Guard examination
- Examination (Per 11.903(b) – if Mate 200 GRT NC held, only celestial navigation required)
- A person holding this endorsement may qualify for an STCW endorsement, according to 11.315, 11.317, 11.319 and 11.321.
Sail / Auxiliary Sail (Optional)
- 360 days on sail or auxiliary sail vessels, (NOTE: Tonnages for Sail or Aux Sail endorsements must be calculated separately for endorsements over 100 GRT)
- 200 GRT
- 90 days (25%) of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR
- 180 days (50%) of service on vessels over 67 GRT
- Complete CG exam module for Auxiliary Sail or approved Auxiliary Sail course.
Commercial Assistance Towing
- Complete CG exam module for Assistance Towing or approved Assistance Towing course.
- OUPV
- Upgrade OUPV to Master 100 Ton
- Upgrade Master 100 Ton to Master 200 Ton
- First Aid/CPR
- FCC Radio Operators Permit
