Must have U.S. Citizenship OR be an alien admitted for permanent
residence.
Minimum Age Required
18 years
Medical Certificate Requirements
- Original – Must hold a valid Medical Certificate or be approved for Medical Certificate.
- Renewal, ROG, New Endorsement – Must hold an unexpired Medical Certificate or submit a Medical Certificate application.
Drug Testing Requirement
- Must be Drug Testing Compliant
- DOT
(Note: Only required for first AB endorsement unless also renewing.)
Fee Requirement
Mariner Fees must be paid
Exams
- Course completion certificate in lieu of Coast Guard examination
- Examination
- AB Unlimited: 540 days deck service on Oceans or Great Lakes
- AB Limited: 360 days deck service on vessels 100 GRT or over, not exclusive to rivers & small inland lakes of the U.S.
- AB Special: 180 days deck service on any navigable waters of the U.S.
- AB OSV: 180 days deck service on any navigable waters of the U.S.
- AB Sail: 180 days deck service on sailing school, oceanographic vessels powered primarily by sail or equivalent sailing vessels on any navigable waters of the U.S.
- AB Fishing: 180 days of service on any navigable waters of the U.S. (Note: “Combi” is not deck service)
- AB MODU: 360 days service on vessels 65 feet or over on any navigable waters of the U.S.
- Able Seafarer Deck
- Proficiency in Survival Craft (Lifeboatman)
