This course is designed to prepare candidates for the Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED Oiler) certification, a key qualification for engineering personnel on merchant vessels. It covers essential topics such as marine engineering fundamentals, engine operations, auxiliary machinery, and safety protocols.

Approvals

USCG
This course meets the Coast Guard examination requirements per 46 CFR 12..501(b)(1)(ii) for a national endorsement as QMED-Oiler. Upon successful completion, candidates will be eligible to apply for their USCG QMED endorsement.*

Course Duration
The online course was developed from NMI’s in person 3 week course.

Assessments

Written Examination
This course consists of two final written exams. Each exam contains 70 questions and requires a 70% passing score.

  1. QMED General
  2. QMED Oiler

The written exams can be taken online through HALO° Exams. Once you complete all of the lessons in this course, you will be directed to haloexams.com to register for an account and access the exams.

If you fail all 3 attempts of either exam, you will be required to re-take a portion or all of the course. A re-take fee of $50.00 will cover the cost of re-enrollment and an additional exam attempt.
