This course covers the subject matter required by STCW Table A-II/5, including the STCW Functions of:


  1. Navigation at the Support Level

  2. Cargo Handling and Stowage

  3. Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care for Persons on Board

  4. Maintenance and Repair


Subjects include anchoring and mooring procedures; cargo handling and stowage; safe navigational watches; health and safety precautions; deck equipment and machinery maintenance and operations; pollution prevention; and shipboard maintenance and repair.


Upon completion of the online theoretical section of the course and online written examination, students will need to complete the practical assessments. This may be done through one of the following:


  1. Downloading the required practical assessments to be completed onboard a Dominica Administration approved vessel with an approved, qualified assessor; or

  2. Scheduling of an Assessment Session with one of Northeast Maritime Institute's Regional Assessors at an additional cost; or

  3. Scheduling of an Assessment Session at Northeast Maritime Institute's campus in Fairhaven, MA at an additional cost.


In order to obtain an Able Seafarer document upon completion of the course, each student entering the program must be at least 18 years of age, be able to pass the prescribed physical examination, and meet the sea service requirements. The applicant must also have a minimum of 360 eight hour days in the deck department of a vessel over 65 feet/100 gross tons.
